POD (peas be seeded), 2016

Flux Art Fair 2016
Harlem, NYC

POD (peas be seeded) was a living sculpture that grew and evolved throughout the FLUX exhibition period. POD was created using cuttings and other “picked up things “ generated by the Harlem Grown farm which temporarily housed this sculpture. Integrated into the basic structure were weavings with reeds and vines, as well as living plants. I happily collaborated with farm managers to grow peas and other plants in the sculpture which also doubled as a resting spot for neighbors, visitors and workers for Harlem Grown – a network of urban farms that teaches children about farming and nutrition. It was my hope that POD would speak to the possibilities of finding joy, wonder and repose in the urban landscape. I considered the piece complete with the first harvest of peas.

Another iteration of POD – this time, a permanent and ever-growing sculpture - will be built in the CASA FRELA sculpture garden in Harlem in the summer of 2017.
